AIR POLLUTION

Air Pollution

When harmful and toxic gases, dust and smoke etc enters the atmosphere Air Pollution occurs. Or we can say air pollution can occurs when the substances are released into the air by human activities in such a concentration that is sufficient to cause harmful effects in animals, human, mankind properties and vegetation.

So all in all, contamination of air inside or outside of house is the cause of air pollution. This causes physical, biological and chemical changes in air which makes it harmful even to take in.

Causes of Air Pollution

Air pollution is caused by gases and aerosols in air. These gases and particles comes from automobiles like bike, car and truck exhaust and even from other sources like factories, dust, pollen, mold spores, volcanoes and wildfires.

[Note: The solid and liquid particles suspended in our air are known as aerosols.]

The following are the source of air pollution:
  • ·         Industrial combutions
  • ·         Stubble burnings
  • ·         Kitchen stoves and wood burning
  • ·         Automobiles byproducts
  • ·         Tobacco
  • ·         forest fires
  • ·         Volcanoes
  • ·         Smelting of metals

Effects of Air Pollution

Air pollution can have serious costs, penalties and consequences for the health of human beings and also ruthlessly distresses the natural bio-network and ecosystems.
Long-term health effects from air pollution include heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory diseases such as emphysema.

Air pollution can also cause long-term damage to people's nerves, brain, kidneys, liver, and other organs.

Some scientists suspect that air pollutants can even cause birth defects
Below are some of the major effects of air pollution :

  • ·         global warming
  • ·         acid rain
  • ·         smog
  • ·         ozone depletion
  • ·         Various health hazards

Remedies for  Air Pollution

Below are some of the major remedies for air pollution :

·         Carpool, use public transportation, bike, or walk whenever possible.
·         Follow gasoline refueling instructions for efficient vapor recovery, being careful not to spill fuel and always tightening your gas cap securely.
·         Consider purchasing portable gasoline containers labeled “spill-proof,” where available.
·         Keep car, boat, and other engines properly tuned.
·         Be sure your tires are properly inflated.
·         Use environmentally safe paints and cleaning products whenever possible.
·         Mulch or compost leaves and yard waste.
·         Consider using gas logs instead of wood.
·         Conserve energy - at home, at work, everywhere.
·         Do from your side to:
  • Reduce or eliminate fireplace and wood stove use.
  • Avoid burning leaves, trash, and other materials.
  • Avoid using gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.

CASE STUDY ABSTRACT IN DELHI

The Ambient Air Pollution problem in National Capital Territory of Delhi is increasing at an alarming rate due to various anthropogenic activities and natural calamities; which significantly change the climatic condition and adversely influence the environmental condition. The study is conducted by statistical analysis for pollution profile of various parameters such particulate matter, nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide; by analyzing the these parameters particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide are not within the permissible limit due to various urban and rural activities in and around the National Capital whereas sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide are within the permissible limits, but if the current scenario of pollution will not stop then our National Capital will be going to face many Climatic problems in future. The study also discusses the various rules and policies adopted by the Government of India, National Green Tribunal and Government of Delhi to tackle the air pollution and improve the air quality of National Capital Delhi.
